Скандий в количестве всего 0,1–0,5% превращает алюминиевые сплавы в высокопрочные, свариваемые и стойкие к рекристаллизации материалы. Сплавы Al-Sc используют в авиации, ракетной технике, спортивном инвентаре (рамы велосипедов, бейсбольные биты) и 3D-печати металлом. Оксид скандия применяют в твердооксидных топливных элементах, иодид — в металлогалогенных лампах.
